About the Event
Malnutrition remains a critical development challenge in Northern Ghana, with protein deficiency contributing significantly to stunting, underweight, and weakened immunity among children. Although poultry products are an important source of animal protein, access remains constrained by low household incomes and limited local production.
Guinea fowl production presents a culturally appropriate, climate-resilient, and economically viable alternative livelihood for smallholder farmers in Northern Ghana. Guinea fowls are well adapted to the savannah ecology, resistant to harsh climatic conditions, and can be raised under semi-intensive systems with relatively low capital investment. They provide multiple benefits, including regular income from the sale of birds and eggs, improved household nutrition through egg and meat consumption, and increased financial capacity to support children’s education.
